If you’re skeptical, that’s likely because the mullet has a complicated history. “There are transformation videos where people show their hair before and after they cut their own mullet,” she explains, “and people with mullets saying, ‘Get one, you won’t regret it.’” Currently, the #mullet tag on TikTok is at more than a billion and counting. So how exactly did the polarizing look that inspired the Beastie Boys to write a song dedicated to dragging it become a coveted cut in 2020?Īs with fashion and beauty trends, often things once considered to be in bad taste become cool again, making a comeback because of nostalgia (who didn’t love Steve’s voluminous hair in Stranger Things ?), or validation from a celebrity like Rihanna, who sported a mullet in her teaser video for the Savage x Fenty lingerie show, and sent models like Cara Delevingne down the runway wearing one in an homage to the ’80s. If you were alive in the 1980s and early 1990s, the mere mention of a mullet evokes one of the era’s signature looks: the business-in-the-front, party-in-the-back style worn by everyone from Ellen DeGeneres to Andre Agassi. What is surprising, though, is that one haircut in particular has been trending during the pandemic: the mullet. It’s no wonder then that in a year rife with change, so many of us have chopped off inches with abandon, while others have adopted an entirely new hairstyle altogether. Major life changes often inspire us to make a trip to the hair salon, where we arrive armed with screenshots and references that capture how we want to look for our next chapter-and what we want our hair to say to the world.
